Descriere

This book has appeared as a reaction to the aggressive overturning of the values societies seemed to wish to build their existence on: truth or at least the search for truth, sound growth relying on the accumulated knowledge capital and driving progress via science which has been humanity’s driving force for the last three hundred years. Truth has relativised to a point where everyone can claim their own truth and science, though outstandingly prodigy, is seriously undermined by political factors. By the massive development of online media, science has become a target for groups that have made from attacking it a purpose in itself. Defenders of various ideologies, supporters of conspiracy theories, religious congregations have joined to accuse science of criminal intentions or of limited comprehension of natural phenomena and ultimately, of vested financial interests.

Cristina Silvia VALCEA is a senior lecturer at Transilvania University of Brasov, Romania where she teaches a range of academic subjects such as Academic Writing, English for Special Purposes, Translation and Interpratation courses. She has developed a special interest in discourse analysis from where she is particularly attracted to the analysis of political discourse and to the latest trends in reality denialism and truth bending. Antiscience is an endeavour at raising people’s awareness about an ever-increasing antiscientific attitude in the society which might entail serious consequences for the whole humanity.
